Must Do Checklist to Prep Your Home for Fall

Checklist to Prep Your Home for Fall

It’s finally sweater weather! . . . Just kidding.

Don’t break out that Irish wool sweater your grandma gave you just yet. As Scottsdale battles the heat again after a glorious moment of cooler temps, we need to focus on things we can control – like Halloween.

Studies show that the average American consumes THREE CUPS of sugar around Halloween – but that seems excessive. Which seasonal candies can cure your sweet tooth before you hit 2,322 calories? And don’t say “candy corn!”

Beyond Autumnal Forced Fun

Fall hits differently in Scottsdale.

But we can’t decorate our front doors with pumpkins for that Instagram-perfect porch-scape because the javelinas will destroy them all and leave you with a huge mess. We can’t put the kids in big furry costumes because they will overheat as they trick-or-treat.

But you can boost the economy by adding your cash to the  $11.6 BILLION spend on Halloween costumes and decorations.

Sadly, this year a favorite Halloween favorite will be much harder to find after a semi-truck full of Twix bars caught fire on the 303 and melted the whole shipment.

Will you miss the Twix?

If sugar and Spirit Stores are not your thing, enjoy our “active season” (October through April) and hit the road for some Fall events. Now is the best time for pumpkin patches, hayrides, the Arizona Fall Fest, and hiking the “Enchanted Aspen Trail” (AKA Inner Basin Trail No. 29) to capture a snapshot of changing leaves in AZ.

It’s time to welcome out-of-town visitors and impress them with the Maricopa County trail system and Scottdale’s Bike & Trail paths, and attend as many outdoor events as possible.

Do yourself a huge favor. As you focus on your family, friends, and the outdoors, let the professionals worry about the details of your indoor spaces – deep cleaning, maintenance, and repairs.

Make your List

The endless summer was out of your control, but you are still the master of your own home. Take charge of your to-do list and create a customized action list that prioritizes seamless indoor/outdoor living in preparation for ‘entertainment’ weather.

Are these tasks are on your to-do list?

  • Stock the pantry with cooking essentials and easy-to-serve snacks
  • Schedule your deep cleaning services on your weekends away
  • Be Charcuterie-ready – keep quality cheeses, meats, fruit, nuts, and crackers on hand
  • Order seasonal-scented candles – not the strong/tired scents from Bath & Body Works
  • Schedule your housecleaners around your hosting obligations
  • Take advantage of end-of-season sales to update your outdoor space
  • Deep clean carpets to remove allergens
  • Sign up for a weekly or monthly flower subscription
  • Grab a Blackstone from Costco – a lot less mess than a typical BBQ grill
  • Fortify your wine cellar with concierge wine services
  • Refresh your planters with herbs and colorful annuals like pansies, geraniums, petunias, snapdragons, and sweet alyssum

There’s a Method to the Madness

It’s deeply satisfying to check off the boxes on your to-do list.

Start with the end in mind. Are you hosting Halloween? Thanksgiving? Poker nights? Mahjong? Post-pickleball tournament get-togethers?

Entertainment may be your end game.

And you can begin to cross off your list with a top-down approach. You have valuable assets at every level in your home that need specialized care. High windows, ceiling fans, walls & cabinetry, furniture & surfaces, then floors.

No matter the purpose of your deep cleaning, you need the work done by people you trust – companies that do the job so well that you wouldn’t even consider DIYing it. You need to find local companies that pride themselves on personalized service, quality customer care, familiarity with luxury finishes, and are trustworthy in your home.
